Atomic Habits (Summary) by James Clear

Atomic Habits by James Clear

It’s all about the power & process of building good habits & breaking bad ones.

Four key insights from this book
  1. The 1% Rule (The power of 1% changes overtime)
  2. Screw goals & focus on systems
  3. Identity changes
  4. 4 Law of behaviors

1% Rule

  • Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement
  • 1% Rule improves things gradually
  • 1% Rule works in both positive & negative way
  • Time really matters in 1% Rule
  • Time magnifies the margin between Success & Failure.
NOTE
  • Feed Better => Positive Growth, Feed Worse => Negative Growth
  • Good Habit => Time Ally, Bad Habit => Time Enemy
Disappointment of 1% Rule
The 1% Rule works slowly. So, you might be facing disappointment at the start.

Screw goals & focus on systems

  • Goals are less important than systems. We need to focus on the system & improve it.
  • Goals never differentiate people.
  • Achieving a goal is a temporary thing. Improving the system makes changes permanent.
  • Start loving the system process. For example, You must love cricket before start playing Cricket.
  • Goals are short-term & improving system processes is long-term
  • Never stick to a single goal. Always make things attractive.
NOTE
  • The purpose of setting goals is to WIN GAME
  • The purpose of building systems is to CONTINUE GAME

Identity changes

There are 3 layers of behavior change
  1. Outcomes (Results)
  2. Processes (Goals, Habits, Systems)
  3. Identity (Belief)
NOTE
  • Always focus on Identity change
  • Ignore Outcomes in start
  • Motivation comes when a habit becomes part of our Identity
  • For long-term change, we need to work on Identity change

4 Laws of behaviors

There are 4 laws of behaviors
  1. 1st law (CUE) - Trigger brain to initiate actions
  2. 2nd law (CRAVING) - Motivational force
  3. 3rd law (RESPONSE) - Action or Habit that we are performing
  4. 4th law (REWARD) - The end goal

How to build a Habit?
  1. CUE - Trigger brain to initiate actions
  2. CRAVING - Motivational force
  3. RESPONSE - Action or Habit that we are performing
  4. REWARD - The end goal

How to Create a Good Habit?
  • The 1st law (Cue): Make it obvious
  • The 2nd law (Craving): Make it attractive
  • The 3rd law (Response): Make it easy
  • The 4th law (Reward): Make it satisfying

How to Break a Bad Habit?
  • Inversion of the 1st law (Cue): Make it invisible.
  • Inversion of the 2nd law (Craving): Make it unattractive.
  • Inversion of the 3rd law (Response): Make it difficult.
  • Inversion of the 4th law (Reward): Make it unsatisfying.
